Just two months ago that the young forward found himself on the pitch at Sunderland, looking confused as his coach scolded him for failing to anticipate a through-ball. At that point, as the club endured a six-game winless run, the question was if his performances were a symptom or a cause of the side's more general malaise.
“When Rogers netted his second… Emery tore off his coat, threw his arms wide, and bellowed in delight.”
In the latest match, however, the sideline response was far more favourable. As Rogers curled home his second to reclaim the lead for Villa, Emery ripped off his winter coat, opened his arms and bellowed. The team were on their way to ten wins in a row , after failing to win their initial half-dozen matches, find themselves a mere three points adrift of table-toppers Arsenal.
Is This Team Serious Challengers?
This is a particularly tough query to answer. The historical record, the perceived status of Villa, suggests not. Additionally, they've rarely been entirely convincing during this run, even as the victories have accumulated.
As per statistical analysis, in only two games has the side had an expected goals figure notably superior than the other team. For a club which has put together a ten-match winning streak, they look weirdly vulnerable – but currently the fine lines are going in their favour.
The Reliant Strategy
The prevailing tactic appears to be to trade blows with an opponent before hoping Rogers to rescue them with some precise efforts. This occurred away to Leeds, it transpired against West Ham, and it happened versus United.
Rogers' first goal came from an exquisite effort, bent precisely inside the upright from a wide position. The follow-up goal was essentially a somewhat messier replica of his first as he pounced on an Ollie Watkins lay-off.
“Much like Robben with his left, Rogers’ right foot has become a known threat that remains brutally unstoppable, regardless of anticipation.”
Is It Sustainable?
Logic says not. Against United, the opponents managed a greater number of attempts and more direct attempts. Villa have won each of their last eight by a single goal. They’ve conceded in all but one of those games.
A statistical correction could be the greatest opponent they must confront as the season progresses. The forward, almost certainly, cannot maintain drilling the football into the top corner week in, week out.
A Case for Belief
Perhaps there is an alternative path whereby, instead of results trending towards performances, the level of play rises to match the results. Important figures may yet return to peak condition.
- Ollie Watkins might resume adding to his goal tally.
- The attacking talent may rediscover the performer he resembled during his peak.
- The injured centre-backs are set to come back from the treatment room, strengthening a sometimes shaky backline.
This could contain the potential of a title challenge, however, it is improbable cannot keep relying on Morgan Rogers.
Enjoying the Ride
Yet, nobody expected this. Few believed Villa would occupy in the top three for the holidays. And without a doubt back in October, no one envisioned the midfielder by the end of the year would be spearheading a title charge while establishing himself as a vital player for the national team.
This remarkable period is to be savoured exactly since it appears so improbable. As the hero faced the home supporters at the final whistle orchestrating the applause, he seemed to be relishing every moment. A feeling he has rightly earned. These runs of form are uncommon in the sport and must be appreciated.
